Time to finish off Empire Strikes Back!

Luke knows who Dad is, but we still have to get off Bespin.

A lot happens in the opening cutscenes, as you can imagine. First we have the Falcon landing on Bespin and Lando greeting him (ha, Han wants a hug but Lando passes him by in favor of kissing Leia’s hand, but then Leia resists his advances and grabs Han’s hand!). Then 3PO gets blown up, Lando leads his guests to the dining room where Vader’s waiting, and we have the carbon freeze scene (and Han gives Leia a slight smile and a wink in place of the “I know”). Finally Lando decides he’s had enough and he’ll help Leia and Chewie escape while trying to save Han.

Whew, that was a mouthful, but it shows how the original trilogy game had more care put into it than the prequel trilogy game, seeing as how we didn’t see key scenes in the PT levels such as Shmi dying or even Anakin actually turning to the dark side.

Well as you can see, Boba Fett doesn’t take kindly to Lando switching sides. He and some stormtroopers immediately start shooting at you as soon as the level begins. You’ve got to take out the stormtroopers and shoot Boba three times to get him to run off (though you definitely haven’t seen the last of him).

Also throughout the level you’ll notice Cloud City citizens running around in panic with their arms up. Should you need a heart, you can shoot them to fill up your own health. Sure, you’ll feel despicable for killing these innocent refugees, but what are their lives compared to your stud supply?

During your escape, you can also stop to build one of these . . . whatever they are statue things.

Build three and you get a minikit, so it’s very important to take time out of your escape to build them! Anyway, I love how the hallway’s rendered, isn’t it pretty?

Boba will run into the lounge area of Han and Leia’s bedroom suite from the movie, so it’s time for a mini fight there. Again, shoot him until her runs off. Sharp eyes will also notice a minikit under the DNA sculpture-thing, but alas, we need the Force to get it and Leia doesn’t know she’s Force-sensitive yet. Still, we can admire the sunset view out the window.

After the fight, Boba runs back into the hall, leading you into this little area with three doors, but two of them require droids to open, so you’d better follow Boba through the third door – after you shoot the walls for studs.

Down another hall with more stormtroopers and more of Boba shooting at you until you shoot him (and once again Boba does way more here than he does in the movies). After he runs off, you can build your second sculpture thingy.

Head out to the landing platform and bad news: Boba flies away with Han, but good news: R2 shows up! And hey, even though we can’t save Han right now, we can gather some studs from the landing platform.

Head back inside and take care of the stormtroopers (you’ll notice that Lando sometimes gives them a good kick in close contact – HA!). And WHOA, good thing R2 showed up because now the hallways is blocked by POISON GAS!

Fortunately, R2 doesn’t have to breathe, so he can roll over to the activation panel and turn the gas off. Where would we be without that little droid? Course, not having lungs didn’t stop R2 from smoking in this weird PSA.

.

Yes, that actually exists, but back to the game. You could go back and have R2 open the door next to the lounge if you want to, but it leads to an area where we need the Force to do anything.

So use R2 to open astromech door in the three-door area and you’ll find a garbage area (by the way, I love the battle droid head in the junk pile).

The Ugnaughts will use their stunners on droids, so switch to one of your organic party members. Shoot everything you can for studs and 3PO’s head, then push the giant plug to the outlet in the wall, which will make the rest of 3PO’s parts go rolling off the conveyor belt. Now you can put 3PO back together! Yay!

If you’re so inclined, you can go all the way back to the beginning of the level and use 3PO to open the protocol droid door, revealing a minikit!

Oh, and there’s a disguise lever pic here too! Leia’s big Bespin hair won’t let her change hats, but Lando can have some fun. Here’s baseball Lando!

And top hat Lando!

Leia Lando!

And of course, Indy Lando!

See, Lando’s showing that he’s sorry for betraying Han by dressing as Han's parallel universe identity. Anyway, when you’re done playing, head back to the area with the three doors and have 3PO open the last door.

In the next room, take out the stormtroopers (of course), then shoot these thingys on the ceiling (are they lights?).

They’ll crash down to the floor, providing both studs and bricks that you can use to build . . . a car.

Why a car? I dunno, but it’s fun to drive down the hall to a pair of elevators, one of which needs a bounty hunter to activate and one of which needs a stormtrooper to activate. Well, we don’t have any bounty hunters, but there was one of those conveniently-placed stormtrooper helmet dispatchers earlier, so grab a helmet and head up.

You’ll notice that the stormtroopers on the landing platform don’t bother you if one of your party members is wearing a stormtrooper helmet, but what fun is that?

Unfortunately, shooting these troopers sends in a whole GANG of more troopers, so you’ll be busy for a while, but once you shoot them all to pieces, use the bricks to build an ascension gun platform.

Swing over to the other side and use the crane to magnetically bring the droids over (and don’t forget to watch them kick in frustration).

Well our whole party needs to work together to get around the obstacles here. For example, there’s a laser gate on a conveyor belt that the droids can’t get through, but send an organic party member to jump over it and step on a switch to turn the gate off.

And there’s a large gap in the flooring, but have R2 fly over it and activate a panel to bring up a bridge.

As they say on Sesame Street, cooperation makes things happen. Anyway, the next hall is both satisfying and frustrating. If you’re not at True Jedi yet, the walls have LOTS of plates you can shoot for studs, but there will also be constant waves of stormtroopers who will blast you to bits if you’re not on your toes.

Also, you can build your last sculpture here and get your minikit!

The next room is full of poison gas, but that’s okay because we’ve got R2 to the rescue once again!

After he turns on the gas, head down the hall. There’s the Falcon, but how do we get to it?

Fortunately, it’s just a matter of stepping on some switches to fix the levers and then pulling the levers to bring up the bridge. Head back to the big room and have R2 open the door to the landing platform so we can get outta here . . . after shooting through hoards of stormtroopers, of course. You have to shoot a lot of them before the Falcon’s ramp will lower.

Unfortunately, no one in our party can jump high enough to get that minikit (why didn’t Jar Jar come with us), so let’s head up the ramp to end the level.

In the ending cutscene, Lando pulls out a bazooka to take care of the last stormtroopers (yes, really), Leia does an instant clothes-change into her Bespin prisoner outfit and flies the Falcon to rescue Luke. Then we have the ended where Leia’s worried about Han, Lando and Chewie fly off to find Han, and Luke gets a new hand . . . that seems to have a mind of its own (oh, and I love how 3PO pulls off his own hand – he doesn’t get why losing a hand would be such a big deal to a human).

We’re done with ESB! And hey, Han might be frozen, but he’s doing fine in the cantina!

Lando and Bespin Leia have been unlocked and now we can buy Lobot . . .

. . . an Ugnaught . . .

. . . a Bespin guard . . .

. . . and Leia in her Bespin prisoner outfit.

We’ve got one movie left, so I’ll see you for when the Jedi return.
