Ladies, gentlemen, and non-binary people, my new battery has arrived, meaning I can finally go back to this blog!

Lego Star Wars: The Clone Wars – the Lego Star Wars game I haven’t beaten. Yeah, when I first got it I played it for a long while, but then I slacked away from it. This time, however, I’m going to finish it – at least the Story Mode. Anyway, this game covers Seasons 1 and 2 of Clone Wars. Not sure why they never made a game for the later seasons – maybe this one didn’t sell well enough, I dunno.

Anyway, unlike in The Complete Saga, this game starts the moment you pick a save slot. We actually open with the Geonosian arena in Attack of the Clones. Obi-Wan, Padme, and Anakin have just been captured and the opening cutscene is once again full of that tongue-in-cheek Lego humor with the spectators enjoying ice cream for the execution and Anakin and Padme’s kiss being interrupted by their cart jolting. Strangely enough, Anakin has his ROTS model here, meaning he’s got a full head of hair before being knighted and his eye scar before actually getting injured.

Well, the prologue serves as a tutorial of sorts. You start in control of Obi-Wan and you’ve got to use the Force to subdue the Acklay into breaking your chains, then you use the Force to break up your stake into stairs. Yup, everything’s still waiting around to be Force-molded.

Once you climb up the stairs, you abruptly switch to controlling Padme. She needs to use her chain to climb up her stake, then toss her chain to Anakin’s stake, which enables Anakin to use the Force on her chain to set himself free.

Yay, everyone’s free now! But uh-oh, we’re still trapped in an arena with dangerous creatures. It’s pretty cool how the developers of this game completely redid the arena instead of just recycling the arena level from The Complete Saga. Anyway, after using the Force to calm the Reek, you can jump on it and ride around the arena while Geonosians shoot at you.

The game will tell you to go chasing after the Nexu, but first you can go riding around breaking everything to get studs – you can actually reach True Jedi here without much difficulty. Ah, the joy of collecting studs! Also, break down the five food stands for a minikit.

When you’re ready, charge into the Nexu four times to kill it. Also, I love how the Nexxu actually has fur rendering this time around instead of just being made of plastic.

After the Nexxu dies, uh-oh, in come the battle droids, but Mace and the other Jedi swoop in to the rescue! Gotta love how badass Lego Mace takes down battle droids while calmly eating ice cream. After the cutscene, you need to use a combination of Padme’s chain and Anakin and/or Obi-Wan’s Force ability to take down the Acklay – use Padme’s chain to restrain the Axelay while Anakin or Obi-Wan jumps on its back and lightsabers it. Do this four times to kill it. Hopefully you’ll have reached True Jedi before this, because there are a LOT of battle droids shooting at you. I mean it, a LOT.

It’s pretty damn impressive how many enemies they’ve got on the screen at once here, and at least on my computer, there’s no slowdown. Hell, there are quite a few graphical improvements from the previous game – characters’ portraits in the corner of the screen now move and when you do a Jedi slam with your lightsaber, you’ll notice a burned spot in the ground. Nice touch.

Anyway, after the Acklay’s dead, the next task is to kill Jango Fett and traumatize Boba for life. Here you get to use a new ability that wasn’t in the previous game: throwing lightsabers. Target Jango as he hovers above you and fling that lightsaber at him! It’s strangely satisfying to do so, then once he’s on the ground, whack him one. Once again, four times and he’s dead. Boba doesn’t seem to mind, though, since he immediately tries on his dad’s helmet.

Next up, in comes Yoda with the clones to save the day. Once the shuttles land, you’ve got to use the Force to open the shuttle doors . . . I guess because the clones can’t do it themselves? Every time you open a shuttle door, some of the Jedi will rush into the shuttle, then you have to use the Force to close the shuttle door so it can take off – don’t ask me why the clones can’t open and close the doors themselves. You’ve got to do this for three shuttles in order to rescue all the Jedi.

And so ends the level with a hilarious cutscene of Yoda using the Force to get Obi-Wan, Mace, Anakin, and Padme into the shuttle – and Anakin and Padme do some adorable flirting while they’re being pulled into the air, HA!

As you can see, this game retains the super-fun gameplay and awesome sense of humor that we’ve come to expect from Lego. Join us next time for when the game begins proper.
