All right, here we are. The LAST level, at least I HOPE.

What an episode to end on. Honestly, I consider The Zillo Beast to be one of the weaker episodes because A: it just feels weird to build an entire story arc around an in-your-face Godzilla reference, and B: how Mace is all “it’s an innocent creature, it’s the last of its kind, we can’t kill it!” Look, I’m all for preserving endangered species, but when a giant monster is ravaging the land and killing people left and right – yeah, kill it. (And yes, I know Godzilla isn’t usually seen as the villain – I’ve seen plenty of Godzilla movies, but usually there’s some other monster or bigger threat that Godzilla has to fight, which isn’t the case here.)

Anyway, here we go. After the opening cutscene we have . . . more base-capturing.

(sighs) Take it away, Vader.

Why am I not surprised that the game’s grand finale is yet another base-capturing level? What am I even gonna say about it? Well . . . destroy ten of these blue rocks for a minikit.

And destroy five of these pointy rocks for another minikit.

And there’s another minikit floating out of reach here – at least I thought it was out of reach, but you can actually get it by ramming the plant it’s floating over.

There’s also a minikit floating over this gate.

To get it, we just use the Force to plug in these glowing plug things and the minikit will drop to where we can reach it.

I also thought I could destroy these glowing gold rocks by summoning a clone squadron to shoot at them, but I couldn’t.

(sighs) Well, capture bases one-by-one like in other base-capturing levels. Destroy silver stuff by summoning a large walker and while you can technically destroy the gold stuff by summoning clone troops, it’s much easier to order a badass tank for that.

Oh, and the rocks in this level respawn, meaning you can technically reach True Jedi by just flying around on a speeder and destroying the same rocks over and over again, but it’s tedious to do so since you need a whopping 300,000 studs to reach True Jedi. I’m not shitting you.

Well, after you’ve captured all the bases, head to the square with the arrow floating over it and press J.

That’ll be the target for the Republic to test their new weapon – which awakens the Zillo Beast!

It really says something about this game when I was half-expecting the Zillo Beast level to not involve actually fighting the Zillo Beast. Well, the game tells me I need one of those badass tanks to take it down, so let’s head over to one of our bases to buy the air support for the tank and . . . you’ve got to be kidding me.

Why can I only buy cannons when cannons will be useless against the Beast?

Excuse me for a minute, I need to listen to an awesome Godzilla song so I won’t explode.

Okay, I’m calmer now, but FUCK! What am I supposed to do now?

I’ve bought every cannon available but the game STILL won’t let me buy air support – WHAT DOES THE GAME WANT ME TO DO??

I spent a little time on one of the cannons shooting at the Beast and it did nothing, but . . . now the air support is available and I can summon the tanks?

So . . . is that what I was supposed to do – buy all the cannons and shoot at the Beast even though shooting at the Beast with the regular cannons was useless? If that WAS what I was supposed to do, then WHAT WAS THE FUCKING POINT OTHER THAN TO WASTE OUR TIME??

(takes deep breath) Okay, okay, I’m calm, I’ll summon a tank and use it to shoot at the Beast . . . and now the game’s telling me I need MORE tanks. Fine, fine, whatever, I’ll buy more air support so I can summon more tanks.

I guess this battle would be epic if it weren’t requiring me to do this ridiculous number of tasks, but anyway, I shot at the gold part of the Beast’s neck while the clones were using the other tanks to do the same thing and FINALLY the Beast fell and the level ended.

That’s IT! I’ve played through Lego Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Sure, there’s still Free Play Mode and bonus stuff, but that’s for later – I’ve got more games to look at first.

So how do I rate this game? It’s a weird one to rate, to be honest, since I WANT to love it. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga is one of my all-time favorite games and I’ve played through it many times, but this one . . . I slacked away from playing it after I first got it back in 2011 and didn’t touch it again until now, and now I remember why. It’s not just me, either – many people on the internet look back fondly at The Complete Saga, but this game seems widely forgotten.

Is it all bad? No, there are some awesome levels and the charm of a Lego game is there, but the overall experience is bogged down by too many repetitive as fuck levels that usually involve capturing bases or flying around to nearly-identical landing platforms. So why is the quality so uneven? My theory is that the game was set for a certain release date, but then for whatever reason it was moved to an earlier release date and had to be rushed into completion – but that’s just a theory and no one should quote me on it. If that WAS the case, though, I don’t blame the people who worked on the game – instead I blame the people in charge of rushing it.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars.

We’re getting closer to The Skywalker Saga, but there’s one more Lego game to play first. What is it? I’ll give you a hint.

“Chewie, we’re home.”
