What happens when Jar Jar enters the mix? Let’s find out.
Well, first thing I have to comment on is that whoever is voicing Jar Jar doesn’t do the best Ahmed Best impression. The Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan actors are doing a good enough job, but for Jar Jar . . . you can tell it’s not Ahmed Best. At the risk of getting an angry mob after me, I’m gonna stick my neck out and say that Best brings a certain charm to Jar Jar that’s hard to replicate with a different voice.
Also, I’ve discovered a spot where you can use the Force to stack crates up to reach a Kyber Brick. Yeah, instead of the Gold Bricks in The Complete Saga, now we have see-through Kyber Bricks, which the game is telling me can be used to buy game extras. Pretty sure there’s nothing that can be purchased with just one brick, so let’s follow Jar Jar to the lake.
I also found a little animal just hanging around and minding his own business, so what do you think I did? Yup, I lightsabered him and made him run off crying. It looks like you can’t actually kill him, but making him cry actually feels like more of a guilt-trip than if he had just broken apart.
Also, Lake Paonga (huh, I never knew the name of the lake until today) is beautifully rendered.
I went exploring around the shore and found a couple more Kyber Bricks before following Jar Jar into the lake. In the cutscene of everyone swimming to the Gungan city, a bunch of fish decide that Obi-Wan looks tasty and start nibbling on him, HA!
Well, I’m supposed to follow Jar Jar, but HOLY FUCKING SHIT, Otoh Gunga is FUCKING GORGEOUS! Not only that, but you can explore it! Seriously, say what you will about the Gungans, but their city is beautiful and now we can actually EXPLORE it. We can destroy the Gungans’ property for studs, hijack and ride a kaadu, and even talk to the citizens (or attack them and make them run away, if you prefer). Now THIS is what Lego games are all about – the sense of exploration and being able to play inside the movies.
I found a console that displayed rotating holograms of different characters, but I couldn’t do anything with it. I’m guessing this is where you can change characters in Free Play Mode (you know, after unlocking them).
Well, I’ve been exploring Otoh Gunga for a while now. I’ve found several more Kyber Bricks and talked to a bunch of Gungans (and trespassed into their homes) and still haven’t gone to see Boss Nass. The place feels really ALIVE, with Gungans going about their daily business all over the place and a large area to explore. The Gungans are entertaining, too. One Gungan talks about how they are a proud warrior people before adding that they aren’t all courageous warriors and asking “Have yousa met Jar Jar?” Another one talks about how he sneaks to the surface when he’s supposed to be working so he can catch gooberfish. A couple of Gungans give you hints about where Kyber Bricks (which they call “shinies”) might be.
Also, in one of the Gungan dwellings I found a droid activation panel in front of a fish tank. Since I don’t have any droids in my party yet, I can’t activate it, but whatever happens is probably interesting, especially since the Gungan by the tank keeps saluting me when I pass by.
Okay, I think it’s finally time to see Boss Nass and continue the story. After the cutscene of the Jedi talking to Boss Nass, Jar Jar becomes playable. Unfortunately, he can’t jump super-high like in The Complete Saga, which is kind of sad. I mean, in The Complete Saga, he had a really useful ability. I mean, here he has a ranged weapon that can be used for out-of-the-way enemies and he can grapple, but I don’t think that’s unique to the Gungan characters.
Oh, he also has an adorably clumsy walk cycle and as he leads the others to the bongo, Obi-Wan expresses concern about his “track record with submarines,” to which Qui-Gon replies, “Rest assured, he will NOT be driving!” How does Obi-Wan know how to drive the bongo, anyway?
The level ends with us reaching the bongo and Jar Jar telling the Jedi they can get in “whenever yousa ready to get crunchens.” Join us next time for our underwater trek. In the meantime May the Fourth be with you!
